Vineyard protection

What is vineyard protection and what is it used for?

Vineyard protection, also known as protective sleeveis an accessory used to protect young vine plants from damage caused by animals (e.g. rabbits), working tools or non-selective herbicide treatments.

They come in a variety of types: flexible pockets or sleeves, nets, "mixed" pockets (solid lower part and mesh upper part), re-formable protections, tubes, protected seedlings, etc.

What criteria need to be taken into account when choosing vineyard protection?

  • The height, which depends on the risk to be protected: at least 40 cm to protect vines from herbicide treatment, at least 60 cm for rabbits, etc.
  • Diameter : this must allow sufficient air circulation within the protection.
  • Color : the ideal color is fairly light and translucent, allowing light to pass through without burning the plant.
  • Longevity: at least two years (the length of time the plant needs to be protected), it can be longer, in which case the protection can be recovered and reused.
  • Full cost: this includes the price of the protection, installation time, and the price of the stake(s) needed to hold it in place.
  • Other: environmental aspects, agronomic effect, visual integration into the landscape, etc.
