Trellising staples
What is a trellising staple?
Let's start with a definition given by the LPG association (Le Palissage Garanti): "The staple is a piece of equipment installed each year in the spring when the vines are trellised to keep the lifting wires tight and to prevent vegetation from piling up and shoots from escaping. It is removed in the autumn. That's why it's also called a "lifting staple".
What is the purpose of the trellising staple?
According to the LPG association, the purpose of staples is threefold:
- To encourage vegetation to spread out.
- Facilitate vine management and work (pre-pruning, trimming, harvesting, etc.).
- Improve treatment efficiency.
What criteria should I take into account when choosing a staple?
- Material (plastic, wood, metal, etc.), which determines the type of staple: biodegradable, degradable, recoverable, permanent.
- The desiredspacing for lifting wires.
- Staple strength expressed in kg: in the case of degradable staples, this decreases over time.
- Other: color, installation/removal time, ease of handling, etc.
